This exhibition brings together big and small paintings. The big ones aren’t big beside the Sistine Chapel. They aren’t even my biggest works, but are big enough to bring up, along with the small ones, the eternal question of scale. Scale is not only a physical fact. Good painting can create a fictional illusion of scale, through composition, treatment and even the manner and size of brushmarks across the larger forms. ~ Ian Smith
